Pal’s History

The original Pal’s opened in 1956 for $20,000 and is still located on Revere Street in Kingsport. 29 additional restaurants have been added to the area since then.

The success story begins with Pal’s parents, Fred and Helen Barger, known as Big Skoby and Little Skoby, who ran a post-World War II barbecue, hamburger and beer restaurant in a 20-foot by 40-foot structure in Kingsport.

Pal remodeled the chain after his Fred died in 1971, turning it into the area’s leading fine dining restaurant at the time.

Pal was always a risk-taker, and he boldly challenged the conventional notion of the American burger. The mega-condiment combination of ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, and spices that season the Sauceburger is due to Pal’s trailblazing innovation.

Pal’s also offers education services. Through the use of flash cards, employees are taught how much chili goes on a hot dog. Pal’s has the industry’s best employee training programs and excellent low turnover, health ratings, speed, and accuracy.

Pal’s current headquarters is on the site of Skoby’s old home in Kingsport. Metal sculptures of most Pal’s menu items are positioned in front of the structure, another Tony Barone job.

Pal Barger’s family has deep roots in Kingsport. George Barger, Pal’s grandfather, was the city’s first police chief. And Pal has been a good friend to his community. Pal Barger Regional Center for Automotive Programs at Northeast State Community College and the Carousel at Kingsport are among his charitable initiatives in his hometown.

Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award was given to Pal’s Sudden Service. In 2002, company creator Frederick “Pal” Barger and CEO Thom Crosby went to Washington, D.C., to accept the prize from President George W. Bush. Pal’s was the second Kingsport to win a Baldrige—Eastman Chemical Company.

Pal Barger, who has worked in the restaurant industry for many years, had already developed the ideal business model for the pandemic. Almost all of those 30 restaurants are drive-throughs with no seating inside. Pal’s staff were early adopters of face masks during the epidemic and offered to clean customers’ credit cards if they needed it done.
