Friendly’s has been a firm favorite in the area since it first opened its doors. With an extensive ice cream list, diner-style ambience, and grounded food menu of burgers, sandwiches, and more, Friendly’s won over customers with its family-friendly dining experience.
Friendly’s closed down all of its locations during World War II in 1941. The brothers posted signs on their restaurants’ windows declaring that they would reopen “when we win the war.” In 1945, after the conflict had concluded, the Blake brothers kept their word and reopened.
Friendly’s began selling its ice cream in take-home containers in 1950. By 1951, there were 10 Friendly restaurants throughout Connecticut and western Massachusetts. The business transferred its headquarters from Springfield to Wilbraham, Massachusetts, in 1960. The new base was near a creamery that continues to produce the ice cream for much of the Friendly system.
Friendly’s had expanded to 500 restaurants throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and northeastern United States by 1974.
