The Story of Blake’s
It was 1952, and World War II had just ended. To start a Lotaburger on the corner of Southern Avenue and San Mateo Boulevard, Blake Chanslor, a veteran from Borger, Texas, moved to Albuquerque.
The lunch menu featured a Lotaburger for only 35 cents, as well as a smaller Itsaburger and a bag of chips. A vending machine down the street sold soda if you wanted to quench your thirst any further.
Chanslor observed that many of his clients brought their own green chile to smear on top. Inspired by those classic New Mexicans and chiles connoisseurs, Chanslor began seasoning his dishes with green stuff.
According to restaurant folklore, he was the first business to sell a green chile cheeseburger, which is now a staple of New Mexico. Blake’s Lotaburger now has 74 restaurants in New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas.
Breaking Bad fans know that their burgers and bags were frequently seen on the program.
